Are you truly creating your own avatar?

Opdateret: 2. okt. 2020

I have a feeling that the topic of "building an avatar" seems incorrect and vague. According to the book "the meaning of dress", there are many possibilities when it comes to building one's character, yet it is emphasized that one is forced to gradually build on one's character.

All the Limits

They are pointing out that the avatar figurer has a lot of limitations, in what you can choose from back in 2009 when the expansion was Cataclysm and the max was LV. 83 from kotaku.com (27.11.2019). The steps after choosing a realm were. 1) chose your side, horde, or alliance. 2) Choose your race and gender. 3) choose a class. 4) choose visual trademarks like scars and etc. 5) choose your name.

In the Book, its discussed, that steps 2 and 3 are the most important before going online. But by the other information, we have gathered, it seems that step 5 is just as important if not much more to a certain degree.

In The Interview with Morten Saxtorff Andreasen, he points out, that with the over 50+ different characters throughout he's gaming years, the name is the personal label that often is repeated on both different platforms and different avatars. He points out that this name connotes something more than the figurer since race and class have some limitations within the world. he points out, that lots of players look the same, and it's more about the gear and armor that is noticeable, than a scar or not. Morten also described what he found to look for, in other characters: "actually I started my wow career just running around Orgrimar, and checking out people's gear, becurse it looked awesome! - and it meant a lot for me to have the right visuals on my avatar. and I have shopped a lot around after the right gear that would fit my characteristics.!" (the avatar podcast 1 episode 22:12).
