An essential key to understanding the different sides and Focuses so it seems clearer. Often the terms are used in a sentence like I Can't identify with the company or its rules. this means that the person talking (whom we call X) are saying that: The values and rules that this company is practising, are not in balance with my/X's ground values and rules, and are therefore not something X wants to be referred to or with as X Personality. So to clarify I will start by listing both here:
Identity
The identity Is in someway the inner core and invisible part of your personality. It's something that you give yourself. In short, it has to do with what you stand for, morals, values, etc.
It is who you are physically and legally, but that's just a basic "you already know that" statement.
Personality
The Personality is a way in which you portray or "live in" your identity. For example, you can identify parts of someone's personality: humorous, attractive, intelligent, funny. Both adapt and change over time, but your identity changes less often, I believe.
The Mix
A characterisation therefore is a mix of both, and Together they are what makes a whole person.
It's really difficult to give a concrete answer because a lot of this can be subjective, debatable and complex.
Let's take a look at this from a different gaming angle:
Let's say that we know this Person who is named X.
X is an lv. 20 elf and have rouge as its class. The lv is just a liner understanding un how X's personality was on that specific time. But X also identifies strongly with being an elf, and this is not changeable. X' can develop the bond but will unlikely be able to change this. Then looking at X's Class, that underlines a behaviour strategy X can either be a good or a bad rouge depending on its skills and resourcefulness. This is therefore developable and sometimes changeable. Would X rather work with a two-handed Waco then dual-wielding two daggers this would reflex on X as a personalised favourite or taste? Enemies would be able to understand both X's tactic and preferable strategy in fitting from the known visual knowledge, but without a conversation with X, one would not be able to easily to know about the bonded relation X has to the Racial background and this perception of identity. The personality, however, may not be portrayed as a great rouge, but can come off as sneaky, reserved, perceptive, charming, and etc. . and personality is how someone seems to behave.
Both go really well together but that doesn't mean that they are always similar. (ex. a dwarf tank would probably seam, not as preferable as a giant and Tank) In most cases, you will find that identity and personality are similar, though.
The second identity
is, therefore, a new term we have to understand as well. since a lot of people and articles are referring to ones online life as another way of presenting one's identity by having a whole new set of values on the other platform.
games like Second Life, made this topic explode on the media back in 2012 (community.secondlife.com)
This second identity is therefor unlikely something prefixed or stationary only online but can wary between both platforms, games or even just different avatars. the Book "the meaning of dress also, talks about this, and are presented an individual blog post.
