Term: An Avatar

Opdateret: 13. nov. 2019

before getting started, let's get something clear. This site is in no connection with either the Film "Avatar" by J. Cameron (2009) or the animated series "Avatar: the last air bender" by M. D. Dimatino & B. Konietzko (2005).

even though their scrip passes thugs some of the aspects in having an alternative version, of themselves, this is not my angle.

How, when and why I use the term Avatar.

When talking about an avatar we are to think of a figure that represent someone or something else.

specifically in the online world where technology is the instrument to communicate with others, ist often used as the main idea of the IRL (in real person) gamers behind the screens as there leading representation through media

As Techterm describes it " Avatars are commonly used in multiplayer gaming, online communities, and Web forums..... But are also used in online communities, such as Second Life and The Sims Online." (08.10.2019)

-So having a figure online is more than common in this age of technology (anno 2019)

The most interesting is, therefore, to find out how these games represent themselves through endless choices of looks and traits. some Avatars have the possibility to evolve by levelling. For example, a WOW (World of Warcraft) player may choose a to be a hunter with green amour as his starter avatar. But As the player progress in the game, his character may gain items and experience with new colours and other traits, which allows the avatar to evolve over time, and therefor costume their online figure to a custom-made avatar.

This means:

Regardless of these applications, avatars allow people to represent themselves online in whatever way they want.

Therefore I find it super relevant to undertake an investigation in the gamer's choices since an avatar could very well be considered as alter-egos. So with a set of questions, I will set out on a journey, to find, and interview several gamers on this topic of:

Can an "online visual identity" be considered as there actual personas?

Especially since users can customize characters that are completely different than their biological limits, and therefore can be custom-designed to create a unique appearance for each player.
